Policy Statement

This event is being organised by a local committee of musicians and jazz fans.

Our aim is to promote jazz on the Isle of Wight. Members of the committee will not receive any financial reward. Audited accounts will be made available after the event.

The committee will cover the cost of the main venues and headline acts. This will be funded by sponsorship, ticket sales and other fund-raising activities.

Any subsequent profits will go towards funding future events and a donation to charity (IW Mountbatten Hospice).

We will encourage other performances during the period. However, we will not act as agents. It will be the responsibility of the performers and venues to negotiate between themselves.

Workshops

With Newport Jazz Weekend just a few weeks away, the organisers have received a massive boost with receipt of a grant from the Arts Council of England. This funding in particular will allow a wider range of jazz education and workshops to be provided.

NJW's Chairman, Bill Wills, said "One of our main aims is to promote jazz music amongst the local community and especially the younger generation. We have a number of top-class professional musicians visiting the Island from 20-22 July and this funding allows us to offer a wide range of workshops".

The workshops are open to all ages and their exact structure will depend on the numbers, standard and instrument of the participants. It is anticipated that they will take place on the Friday and Saturday mornings of the Weekend. There will be opportunities for the participants to then demonstrate their talents at the public jam sessions which take place on both evenings. Tutors available over the weekend include Gary Plumley (sax), Andy Urquhart (trumpet), Sandy Suchodolski (bass). There will also be piano, drums and rhythm section tuition available. Those under the age of 25 will not have to pay for their workshop places.

There is a unique opportunity on Sunday 22 July for guitarists to learn from one of the world's master jazz musicians, Martin Taylor. He will be holding a jazz guitar Masterclass at 4pm at the Riverside Centre prior to his 9pm concert at the same venue. Places for both the Masterclass and the concert are limited and early booking is advised.

Workshop and tuition places are limited and booking will be essential. Full details will be provided nearer the time but please, in the first instance, aim all workshop and tuition enquiries to Jim Thorn on 01983 614075 or jimthorn1@newportjazzweekend.co.uk
